OBJECTIVE
Townsville, North Queensland’s largest regional city, hosts the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority headquarters. Despite not having as many reef tourists as Cairns and the Whitsundays, Townsville attracts visitors to its accessible fringing reefs on Magnetic Island and spectacular outer reefs. The challenge was to celebrate 20 years of Reef Check Australia’s vital reef monitoring efforts, inspire community action to protect these underwater treasures, and highlight Townsville’s unique connection with the reef.
RESULT
I collaborated with Reef Check Australia and the Townsville City Council to create captivating pieces celebrating 20 years of reef monitoring efforts. Utilizing a blend of digital and print media, I developed visually stunning materials that highlighted this milestone and inspired community action. The designs aimed to ignite urgency and ensure the long-term resilience of our reefs.
Our approach included showcasing the program’s history and achievements, emphasizing long-term reef health monitoring around Magnetic Island, and promoting the Reef Ambassador program launched in 2017. These elements were integrated into a cohesive campaign that celebrated dedicated volunteers and connected citizen science with practical local action.
The project highlighted Townsville’s unique connection with the reef and ongoing efforts to protect it. By creating engaging and impactful visuals, we celebrated Reef Check Australia’s achievements and promoted the importance of protecting Townsville’s underwater treasures.
